A $100,000 gross salary in San Francisco delivers $73,408.86 net at US price levels. Matching that purchasing power requires 🇮🇳 $36K in India, 🇹🇭 $46K in Thailand, 🇿🇦 $55K in South Africa — the three destinations where your salary stretches furthest in our 36-country set, 2026.

The math underneath: for each destination D, we solve for the gross salary that delivers a USD net equal to source-net × (price-level-D / 100). Tax engines run country-by-country (US progressive + state-agnostic federal-only here, France quotient familial, UK PA taper, etc.). The result is a binary-search-derived "equivalent gross" — not a perfect measure of lifestyle (it doesn't capture quality of public services, climate, or social fabric) but a clean answer to the literal question "what salary do I need to buy the same basket?"

Two caveats worth flagging. First: US tax here is federal-only (no state). Adding California state would push the effective rate up ~5pp on $100K, which makes the SF baseline slightly more generous than a real SF resident's. Second: cost of living is country-average — San Francisco specifically is ~140% of US average per BEA RPP, so a true SF-vs-elsewhere arbitrage would be even more dramatic. For SF-specific city comparisons, see the San Francisco profile.
